Breaking Borders: Dr. Samana Sayed, The Indian Physiotherapist Who Took Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation to the World

  • A first-generation physiotherapist who broke barriers of gender and geography to become a global educator, clinician, and leader in cardiopulmonary rehabilitation.

Mumbai| Dubai: In a field where physiotherapy has long been associated mainly with muscles and joints, Dr. Samana Sayed has emerged as a global pioneer who transformed the way the world views cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. A globally renowned cardiopulmonary (Heart and Lungs) physiotherapist from India, she became the first Indian physiotherapist to take cardiopulmonary rehabilitation education to a truly global platform, bringing international recognition to Indian physiotherapy.

Starting her journey in Mumbai without any family background in medicine, Dr. Sayed carved her own path in a specialty that was largely unexplored in India at the time. Over the past 14 years, her work has taken her to 17 countries, where she has been invited by healthcare institutions to train physiotherapists in advanced cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. Beyond education, she has led international health camps, rehabilitation camps, clinical consultations, and public health awareness programs, making physiotherapy a crucial part of heart and lung disease management worldwide.

Her impact is reflected in the scale of her work. Dr. Sayed has treated more than 15,000 patients with structured, evidence-based rehabilitation protocols and has trained over 30,000 physiotherapists globally, equipping them with advanced skills in pulmonary, cardiac, and metabolic rehabilitation. Her contribution to healthcare education has earned her 65+ global healthcare awards, including recognitions such as the Apeejay Abdul Kalam Award, Best National Clinician, Inspiring National Woman Doctor, Clinical Excellence Award, Global Physio Award, and Best Physiotherapist Award.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, when pulmonary rehabilitation became critical worldwide, Dr. Sayed stepped forward as one of the first global COVID educators from India, training nearly 8,000 physiotherapists through virtual platforms who were working as frontline warriors in hospitals. For her contribution during the crisis, she was honored with the National Pandemic Warrior Award.

Her leadership in physiotherapy began early. In 2016, she became one of the youngest Heads of Department, introducing structured lung rehabilitation programs in Navi Mumbai and pioneering advancements in cardiopulmonary physiotherapy long before the specialty gained mainstream attention.

Recognizing the need for global collaboration and better opportunities for physiotherapists, Dr. Sayed founded You360 Healthcare & Academy, a global platform dedicated to advanced physiotherapy education. Through this initiative, more than 500 courses have been conducted across multiple countries, creating a global network of physiotherapists and opening pathways for professional growth and international opportunities.

Today, Dr. Sayed serves as Co-Founder and Director of healthcare and education initiatives in Mumbai and Dubai, while also contributing to academia as an Honorary Professor at universities in Spain and the United States.

Her journey from a first-generation physiotherapist to a global educator, breaking all the barriers,  stands as a powerful reminder that determination can transcend borders. While her achievements have taken Indian cardiopulmonary physiotherapy to the world stage, Dr. Samana Sayed continues to dedicate her work to empowering physiotherapists globally—ensuring that knowledge, opportunities, and better patient care reach every corner of the healthcare system.
